Uneven Breasts: Incredibly Common! What are the Options?

Many women have uneven breasts, or breast asymmetry. Breast asymmetry, where one breast is larger or shaped differently than the other, is quite common. Many women experience uneven breasts, and it can be due to various factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, or development during puberty. In most cases, it’s a normal variation of the body.

If the difference is more pronounced or has a sudden onset, it is worth discussing with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Additionally, if the asymmetry causes discomfort or self-consciousness, there are various options such as padded bras, breast forms, or even surgical procedures to achieve balance. This is normally why I see patients with breast asymmetry–they feel uncomfortable with the difference.

There are solutions that can be attempted prior to coming in for a consultation with a plastic surgeon, such as non-surgical solutions including padded bras and inserts; Silicone inserts for the smaller side; or customized bras where extra padding and support can be added to one side of the bra to achieve a balanced appearance.

Another solution is exercise, although this cannot make a large difference, a small change can be achieved. Patients can do chest exercises such as push ups, chest presses, or chest flyers to tone the muscle behind the breast tissue.

If non-invasive exercises don’t work or achieve the look you are desiring then it is time to meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon. The surgical solutions include a breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, and fat transfer to the breast. A breast augmentation is when a breast implant (or implants if the patient is desiring a more voluptuous look all around) is surgically placed to make the smaller breast larger to match the larger breast. Another option is a breast reduction, where the larger breast has tissue removed to match the smaller breast.

A breast lift is sometimes needed to address sagging, or a shape that is not cohesive with the other breast. And finally a fat transfer can be done using the patient’s own tissue from another part of their body. That tissue is then injected into the breast. It is important to note that a fat transfer can typically only add up to a cup size. For a larger difference, breast implants are utilized.

If you are interested in a consultation to make your breasts more symmetrical, please call the office to make an appointment in either the Plano or Anna location.
