Liposuction to Axillas? What is it? And why is it so popular?

As we age, we tend to have localized fat deposit in different areas. One of those areas is the axillas-the armpit area just north of the breast tissue. It can stick out from clothing and bras and for some it is bothersome. So how can plastic surgery help? By doing liposuction to the axillas! Liposuction of the axillas (underarm areas) is a cosmetic procedure aimed at removing those pesky  excess fat deposits from the armpits. It is performed for aesthetic (cosmetic) reasons, especially in individuals who may have stubborn fat pockets in the axillary region that don’t respond well to diet or exercise. It can also improve contour and symmetry, and sometimes addresses issues related to underarm fullness, which can cause discomfort or self-consciousness.

So how is it performed? Here’s an overview of liposuction to the axillas:

1. Anesthesia: Typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and patient preference. In my practice, I typically do the liposuction in conjunction with another procedure such as a breast lift, or during a mommy makeover.

2. Incisions: Small incisions are made in discreet locations in the axilla.

3. Fat Removal: A cannula (thin tube) is inserted to break up and suction out the fat deposits.

4. Post-Procedure: Patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort.

Many patients report that once the swelling and bruising (if occurring) dissipates, then they have that enhanced body contour they were desiring as well as improved clothing fit.

Recovery typically takes a few weeks, during which patients should avoid strenuous activities to prevent complications.
