Blepharoplasty–The Newest Craze in Plastic Surgery (but its an oldie!)

It seems as though everyone is talking about blepharoplasty surgery, or eyelid surgery. Hollywood celebs are seeking this plastic surgery procedure to create a more youthful, bright eyed look. After blepharoplasty surgery patients report feeling as though they look more rested, alert, and younger. During a blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery either the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both are surgically altered to remove the excess sagging or loose skin. This eyelid procedure can be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures-typically a facelift, necklift, or brow lift.

Sometimes the excess eyelid or under eye skin creates folds and disrupts the natural contour of the eyelid. Patients report they feel more tired with the excess skin making it more difficult to keep their eyes open. The excess skin can also limit the visual field of the eye. This typically occurs in the peripheral visual field. A blepharoplasty procedure can also help target stubborn bags under a person’s eyes as well as excess fat deposits that can occur. Of course, fine lines and wrinkles are also a target of eyelid surgery.

During an upper blepharoplasty, I make an incision in the eyelid crease, removing the skin and any excess fat from that point to hide the incision in the eyelid crease. During a lower blepharoplasty, I make an incision right below your lashes to hide the incision in that location. Blepharoplasties tend to heal quickly thanks to the blood supply to the face, with about 2-4 weeks for full results.
